  • Abstract:
The Subsystem Technology Application to Rail Systems (STARS) program was launched in 1979 by UMTA and APTA. STARS addresses the management and technical needs of transit authorities; it is a multiyear, multimillion dollar effort. STARS projects represent the expressed needs and potential solutions to problems of transit authorities with selection based on research likely to yield high payoff in improved transit performance. The projects discussed in this Digest are: AC propulsion, electromagnetic interference and compatibility; air comfort system improvement; fare collection reliability; rail car door improvement; energy cost reduction; automatic train operation and control; trainline multiplexing; winterization and escalator design and maintenance. Some projects are directed at safety and performance improvement; others are cost-reduction; automatic escalator design and maintenance. Some projects are directed at safety and performance improvement; others are cost-reduction efforts. An important function of STARS is to accelerate flow of information developed locally which can be adapted to a large proportion of the transit community. Following descriptions of the selected STARS projects there are bibliographies of technical documents reporting results of the specific research and development activities.
