Abstract:A Graphic Route Information Panel (GRIP) is a proposed on-roadway signage approach to deliver information in advance of a driver decision point, using a combination of text, colors, and representative maps of the roadway system. The information basis for a GRIP sign is dynamic, reflecting changing roadway conditions such as congestion indicators and/or pricing levels. The purpose of this project is to determine the safe and optimal design features for a GRIP sign to be placed on Southbound Interstate 35 (I-35) north of, and within, Austin, Texas, to present drivers with information to affect a travel choice between I-35, which does not carry a toll, and State Highway 130 (SH 130), which does. Based on the results of focus group studies, laptop-based human factors laboratory studies of driver sign comprehension, and driving simulator studies evaluating driver eye-glance behavior around GRIP signs, researchers developed recommended GRIP sign designs for I-35 near Georgetown. Additional steps required to ultimately fabricate, install, and operate this type of sign were also provided.
