Abstract:The scope of this project involved developing a methodology to quantify the impact of road’s condition on emissions and providing guidance to assist TxDOT in improving maintenance strategies to reduce gas emissions. The research quantified vehicle gas emissions for Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Hydrocarbons (HC), and Nitrogen (NOx) based on pavement condition. On the same pavement sections, the International Roughness Index (IRI) and gas emissions were measured with the Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS). Statistical analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between pavement roughness and gas emissions. As a result of this study, it was found that the better the pavement condition the lower the vehicle gas emissions. Equations to estimate vehicle gas emissions from pavement condition are presented in this report. Potential gas emission savings due to the implementation of effective maintenance and rehabilitation practices are also quantified.
