Abstract:This study discusses the methods used by Nicholson Construction Company in the design of permanent ground anchors specifically as related to retaining walls. Basic soil parameters, design concepts, drilling and grouting methods for ground anchors are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on anchors founded in soil rather than rock formations. Also, soil properties necessary for the proper design of anchored retaining walls are detailed. The second chapter of the report is devoted to a general discussion of retaining wall and anchor design. In addition, a design example of an anchored retaining wall is presented in a step by step manner. Three documented case histories of anchored retaining wall projects are presented. All are permanent walls constructed by different methods (steel sheet pile, H-beam and timber lagging with concrete facing, and tangent reinforced concrete drilled shafts) and all are supported by permanent ground anchors. Companion reports on the design of permanent ground anchors are: FHWA/RD-81/150 Soletanche Design Criteria FHWA/RD-81/152 Stump Design Criteria
