Abstract:Diverse states like Virginia, with a mix of urban, suburban, and rural environments and transportation systems, cannot rely on a single approach to increasing transportation sustainability, but require an understanding of what has worked and what might work for the state’s wide range of communities. The Virginia Sustainable Travel Choices project examines travel sustainability across Virginia, exploring how key indicators vary by location and land use patterns. This report asks, how are Virginians increasing the sustainability of their travel today, and what travel choices, by location, may be most effective in the future? For this report, sustainability is defined primarily as long-term environmental benefits from reduced energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The analyses focuses on three potential approaches to achieving sustainability benefits through the transportation system: (1) reduced vehicle miles traveled (VMT), (2) improved vehicle efficiency, and (3) increased travel by alternative modes. This report demonstrates how VMT, vehicle efficiency, and travel mode vary across neighborhoods, counties, and the state as a whole.
