    • Abstract:
      On July 22–23, 2008, the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Office of Interstate and Border Planning and Office of Real Estate Services sponsored a 1.5– day peer exchange focusing on select state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) applications of geographic information systems (GIS) in the right-of-way (ROW) area. Purposes of the peer exchange, which was a follow-up to a peer exchange held in August 2007 on the same topic1, were to:

      Provide participants with an update on the progress of the National Cooperative Highway Research Program's (NCHRP) Project 8-55A Developing a Logical Model for a Geospatial ROW Information Management System;

      Allow participants from the 2007 peer exchange to describe the progress each has made over the last year in developing their respective GIS for ROW applications; and, more generally,

      Give state DOTs with noteworthy GIS applications for ROW the opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences with each other and with state DOTs in the beginning stages of implementing GIS in the ROW area.

      Participants at the event, which Missouri DOT hosted at its District 4 Office in Lee's Summit, Missouri, consisted of staff from the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD), California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), FHWA Headquarters, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Minnesota DOT, Missouri DOT, Nevada DOT, Oregon DOT, USDOT Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, Virginia Tech University, Washington DOT, and Wisconsin DOT.
