Abstract:While the mechanical properties of composite repairs for pipelines have been investigated extensively, the performance of the entire metal-composite system has not been addressed with regard to corrosion of the substrate, water intrusion at the composite-metal interface, cathodic disbondment behaviour, and adhesion loss. Both commercial and generic products were tested in this work. Commercial products generally outperformed the generic products, and to protect confidentiality, most figures include only photos of generic products for illustrative purposes. ASTM standards for coatings have been adapted for this work. The procedures address adhesion with the substrate in addition impact and cathodic disbondment resistance, and the data presented within this document is intended to be illustrative to support the validity of the methods. This document concludes with recommended procedures for qualifying composite repair materials for metallic pipelines and pressure vessels, and identifies methods to evaluate their long term performance on cathodically protected metallic surfaces in wet conditions. This work was conducted with funding from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and internal funding from DNV Research and Innovation. Funding from PHMSA extended from mid 2008 to end of 2009.
