Abstract:Research on engineering education has shown that integrating communication skills training into the engineering curriculum is best done in a comprehensive way and not confined to just one or a few courses. Writing standards should be enforced throughout the curriculum. Montana State University sought to do this by providing engineering students with a learning aid and reference guide in the form of an engineering communications toolkit in various Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (M&IE) courses. The toolkit was available to students in hard copy format and electronically. This toolkit was designed to help engineering students become better communicators during their undergraduate education. This report describes the structure of the toolkit and the results of a survey of faculty and students who used it. The toolkit has proved to be a good resource for both students and faculty.
