Abstract:This research project was to evaluate the potential for fire-retardant materials used in aircraft interiors to cause corrosion of aluminum structural alloys. Service Difficulty Reports (SDR?s) were reviewed for several aircraft types, and the most frequent locations for corrosion were identified as fuselage, windows, and frames. Laboratory experiments were designed and conducted for corrosion testing of common aircraft structural alloys (Al 2024-T3 and Al 7075-T6) in the presence of Ultrasuede, Glenlivit, and Highland Wool, common interior materials. Accelerated corrosion test results showed that, for most test conditions, corrosion was increased for all three fire-retardant materials compared to baseline tests without fire retardants. Chemical composition from EDAX studies of the fire-retardants revealed substantial halogens in Ultrasuede and Glenlivit, but negligible halogens in Highland Wool. Thus, the corrosion results cannot be attributed solely to halogens. Sulfur, which is present in substantial amounts in both Glenlivit and Highland Wool, could be another cause for corrosion observed with these materials
