Abstract:Reported here is the Test and Evaluation Plan of a study to investigate the effectiveness of four techniques for reducing wheel/ rail noise in rail rapid transit systems (resilient wheels, damped wheels, wheel truing, and rail grinding) by implementing a testing program on the SEPTA Market-Frankford Line in Philadelphia. Presented are the methods and equipment which will be used to collect, manage, and reduce the data on both acoustic performance and costs of the four noise-control methods. Included are descriptions of the locations for the noise measurements, the schedule which has been set up for wheel and rail maintenance, and the survey of other transit systems which will be performed to collect information relevant to the application of the noise-control methods.
