Abstract:

This research is necessary to address training and research needs for railroads. Very few institutions provide instruction in railroad engineering, operations or management. With increasing government regulation there is a need for Class I railroads, short lines, and mass transit systems to provide training in a variety of areas including asset management, and maintenance systems to maintain a state of good repair. In this research we propose to explore the possibilities for railroad education leading to the implementation of short courses for professionals and ultimately to develop courses for undergraduate Civil Engineering curriculums. The major railroads have recognized the need for additional training and are actively promoting the establishment of additional educational offerings. The goal is to seek funding from railroads, mass transit systems, and government agencies to implement a training program that promotes improved rail operations and maintenance.
