Abstract:The Denver metropolitan area currently faces a number of challenges in providing an adequate transportation system. The area is experiencing near-record population growth, but the available funding for infrastructure is not keeping pace. Denver is a nonattainment area for air quality and must reduce emissions. Air quality regulations also restrict Denver’s ability to increase the capacity of the highway network. Realistic responses to these challenges must recognize the key role of transportation in the economy and its importance to the quality of life. All of these forces mandate that Denver find ways to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the surface transportation system. Intelligent vehicle-highway systems (IVHS) technologies have been identified internationally as having significant potential as tools to enhance highway mobility and safety in the face of these greater social, environmental, economic and geographic restrictions.
