Abstract:This report concludes formal evaluation of forty-one experimental high-type railroad-highway grade crossings installed experimentally throughout Louisiana between 1970 and 1984. These crossings were composed of various of rubber, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), precast concrete or steel plate construction and were installed under the varying ADT situations. Six interim reports profiled construction techniques, durability of the proprietary surface crossing materials, ridability characteristics, effectiveness of the drainage, track rehabilitation procedures and included statistical rail and traffic data. Performance evaluations were conducted examining criteria necessary for establishing departmental policies, procedures and specifications with regard to railroad-highway grade crossings and determining the materials’ suitability for inclusion on the Qualified Products list (QPL).
