Abstract:The first article in this report deals with the rising theft and in-transit hijacking of entire containers and trailers in port cities and adjacent areas in the United States. Cargo thefts are occurring most frequently in Florida, California, New York, and New Jersey with annual nationwide losses exceeding $10 billion. The second article deals with the increasing incidents of organized crime using containers in the attempt to smuggle people into the West, exasperated by the millions of desperate refugees worldwide. The third and final article deals with the emergence of Vietnam as a transit country for heroin smuggled in shipments of the containerized maritime trade.
