Abstract:The purpose of this research was to assess and project the effects of online shopping on vehicular traffic. As more people purchased more goods and services online, we anticipated that short-distance traffic would be reduced. Working against this trend would be the increase in traffic accruing to short-distance delivery of products purchased online. However, the result should be a net reduction in traffic as short-distance shopping is replaced with more efficient short-distance shipping. Another expected effect was the reduction in need for parking at shopping centers, which might eventually have land use implications.
