Abstract:An evaluation of the utility of lighter-than-air vehicles (airships) for Alaskan service suggests that very large vehicles operating at low speeds would transport heavy loads to remote areas with excellent fuel economy, but that the potential market for such vehicles would not justify the cost of their development in present circumstances. Equations relating the effect of design parameters on the ratio of payload weight to fuel weight may be used to verify performance claims made for innovative designs.
