The concept of improving the load carrying ability of unbound aggregates, particularly sand, by lateral confinement has been investigated for some time. Extensive full-scale testing of the trafficability of confined beach sand pavement layers has been carried out by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Waterways Experiment Station (WES) in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Confinement is achieved using a honeycomb type of grid cell structure developed by the Corps and constructed of various materials. (35 p.)
