  • Abstract:
The overall objective of this research is to document the performance and operational characteristics of leading-edge technological approaches for monitoring commercial vehicle braking systems. Improved methods and sensors to monitor braking system operation are needed because of the historical link between compromised braking performance and crashes, and the existing state of the practice for inspecting commercial braking systems. The study focused on the ability of the various sensors to detect abnormalities, defects, and/or misadjustments of the brake system. The study presents a technical examination of the accuracy, responsiveness, resolution, and reliability of the various systems. This knowledge should prove useful to fleet operators in evaluating the capabilities and limitations of alternative approaches to brake sensing, and helpful in determining specifications for future truck purchases. The information should also be useful to brakes system suppliers and commercial vehicle manufacturers that are developing new brake monitoring systems. To this extent, the objectives for the study include providing fundamental research results to industry stakeholders concerning various means of monitoring braking systems.
