    • Abstract:
This paper presents the literature on conducting truck travel surveys in the U.S. and abroad. It includes past experiences, as well as current practices in

conducting truck surveys. The primary purpose of this paper is to present

compiled information on truck surveys and truck travel demand forecasting

experiences to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) to help evaluate

the need for new truck/freight planning tools. The paper reports truck/freight

survey experiences from Councils of Government (COGs), metropolitan planning

organizations (MPOs), for which MTC is one, and other state and regional

transportation planning agencies, both inside and outside of the country. The

paper does not attempt to review literature on freight mode-choice surveys

and/or modeling efforts (competition between rail and truck, for example).
