  At one time, the flight engineer functioned as an inflight maintenance person. Today, the flight engineer is a technical expert, who must be thoroughly familiar with the operation and function of various airplane components. The principal function of the flight engineer is to assist the pilots in the operation of the airplane. Specific duties vary with different airplanes and operators. The questions and answers on the flight engineer knowledge tests pertain only to airplanes that require a flight engineer. Because the questions and answers cover a wide scope of airplanes, powerplants, and systems, some questions are general in nature.
