Abstract:As the regulatory agency assigned the overall responsibility for ensuring public safety from hazards associated with U.S. commercial space launch activities, Office of Commercial Space Transportation (OCST) must oversee that compliance. Licensees using Federal ranges will have to comply with established Range Safety procedures related to both regulatory and safety requirements. If such a launch is to be conducted from a commercial facility, OCST will have to provide more detailed oversight. As an aid to assessing and preparing for that oversight role, this document addresses: 1. A Technical and Terminology Review; 2. Typical Applications Relevant to Space or Space Launches; 3. Classifications of Radioactive Sources; 4. Agencies Involved in the Nuclear Safety Process; 5. Public Concerns and Issues Raised Regarding Past Launches of Payloads Using Radioactive Materials and 6. Key Safety Issues, as Perceived by the National Ranges.
