Abstract:

The U. S. Department of Transportation’s (U.S. DOT) Research and Innovative Technology Administration’s (RITA) John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center), under the direction of the U.S. DOT Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Office of Research and Development (R&D), conducted a research study to evaluate the impact of an education program on highway-rail grade crossing safety. The Volpe Center worked in collaboration with Operation Lifesaver, Inc., to evaluate the impact of the Web-based Rail Safety for Professional Drivers e-Learning Challenge (ProDriver Challenge). The evaluation was conducted using Federal safety data and information on the ProDriver Challenge collected from users about their experiences. ; The evaluation of the ProDriver Challenge e-learning module showed that it was targeting the appropriate audience; it was expanding the number of participants in OLI training, and users valued the experience. The evaluation also revealed areas for program improvement as well as next steps for education and outreach.
