The Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle (Metro) provides transit service to most of King County, Washington, including the city of Seattle. Metro operates 194 routes using a fleet of 1047 coaches, including 151 articulated buses and 109 electric trolley buses. In August 1981, Metro had 259 lift-equipped buses and 16 lift-equipped trolley buses. In addition to lift-equipped, fixed-route buses, Metro funds a subsidized taxi program for the elderly and handicapped, and Metro also subsidizes lift-equipped van service operated by social service agencies in parts of the county poorly served by transit and taxis. Metro is continuing with its policy of buying only lift-equipped coaches. In 1982, Metro expects to receive 202 lift-equipped buses order from MAN of West Germany. Compared to other accessible bus service systems, Metro's service has been very successful in terms of planning, reliability, ridership, lift operations, policies and procedures, and costs. The report shows that the Lift-U lifts used in the Metro transit system have had a low failure rate, thus enhancing the reliability and success of service.
