Abstract:The report presents incidence rates, characteristics, and travel patterns of transportation handicapped and able-bodied elderly (65 and over) persons. Tables and discussion are presented on demographics, health problems, use of mobility aids, and trip rates, purposes and modes, and origin/destination patterns. A section is devoted to functional problems in using public transportation vs. handicap classification, health problem and use of mechanical aid. Respondents are evaluated in their ability to use six different transit modes ranging from a fixed-route regular bus to a door-to-door bus with a lift. Wheelchair/walker users are analyzed separately. Data for this report was derived from a 6,000 household survey conducted in Portland. The survey design, questionnaires and field procedures are described.
