Abstract:A preliminary study of exhaust emissions from Coast Guard vessels and boats indicates that the Coast Guard fleet is an insignificant contributor to air pollution on a national and regional basis. Based upon fuel usage data, emission estimates by vessel class were made for the entire Coast Guard fleet and compared to other sources of marine and land air pollution. No estimates of the effects on air quality of the two-stroke cycle outboard engine could be made. A general review was made of the existing air quality legislation. Existing monitoring instrumentation and emission control techniques were evaluated with consideration to their usefulness in a ship-board environment.
