Abstract:The Extruded Tunnel Lining System (ETLS) has been conceived as a means of continuously placing the final concrete tunnel lining directly behind a tunnel boring machine. The system will shorten the time required to excavate and line a tunnel section, eliminate the need for primary supports, and thus significantly reduce the cost of tunnel construction. With the goal of demonstrating the feasibility of this concept, the Urban Mass Transportation Administration has contracted with Foster-Miller Associates, Inc. to design, fabricate, and test such a tunnel lining system designed specifically for rock tunnel application. The scope of the program and its three phases are: Phase I: R&D-Resolution of basic technological problems; Phase II: System design, fabrication, and test; and Phase III: System modification, test, and demonstration. This report describes the work completed during the first phase of the program. The report presents a state-of-the-art review of related construction practices, concrete technology, and tunnel liner design methods. The ETLS conceptual design is described. In addition, the results of a development program carried out to formulate a rapid setting concrete for use with the ETLS and a test program to demonstrate the ability to slipform and place that concrete under pressure in a closed form are presented. The ability to slipform a well consolidated slab of the rapid setting Very High Early Cement (VHEC) concrete was demonstrated. The slipformed concrete gained strength rapidly and was self-supporting approximately one hour after the initial addition of water to the concrete.
