Abstract:Analysis techniques, a design procedure and design data are described for passenger vehicle, simply supported, single span and multiple span elevated guideway structures. Analyses and computer programs are developed to determine guideway deflections, moments and stresses and vehicle accelerations resulting from a two-dimensional vehicle with finite pad length front and rear suspensions traversing a multispan elevated guideway. A preliminary design procedure is described to estimate guideway beam structural requirements so that a vehicle-guideway system will meet specified levels of passenger comfort. Design data for 150 mph and 300 mph intercity 40,000, 80,000 and 120,000 lb. air cushion vehicle single and multiple span (span lengths of 50 to 150 ft.) guideways is summarized. For both urban and intercity operating regimes, the data indicate that improvements in the vehicle suspension and the use of multiple span structures rather than single span structures may result in reduced guideway material requirements.
