Abstract:Small transit vehicles, defined as those vehicles seating 7-25 passengers and intended for public transportation use, are available in a variety of makes and models with markedly different characteristics affecting both operators and users. This report documents the specifications and operating experience of small transit vehicles available in the United States. Despite the fact that the demand for small transit vehicles has only recently begun to grow there are many more manufacturers of these vehicles than there are of full size transit vehicles. Vehicles are divided into three main categories: vans and van conversions, small buses, and converted motor homes. Operating experience was obtained by sampling from manufacturer provided user lists. Vehicle specifications were obtained directly from the manufacturer. No vehicle has been completely free of problems; no one vehicle is clearly superior to all others, nor is any one category of vehicle clearly superior to any other. A vehicle operator must weigh a number of variables before determining which vehicle is best for a particular application.
