Abstract:This is a final report documenting the Commuter Connection Flexible Registered Ridesharing Demonstration Project. The purpose of this project was to test the feasibility of flexible registered ridesharing, which is a system whereby registered commuters could share rides to work on an occasional basis as either a driver or rider. Commuter Connection, Inc., a nonprofit California corporation, was created specifically for the purpose of designing and implementing this demonstration ridesharing program. The project began operations on March 27, 1979 and terminated on August 31, 1980, and was tested in the Golden Gate commute corridor in the San Francisco Bay Area in California. This report describes project planning and development during 16 months of operations. It also describes members' use and attitudes about the system and analyzes the demonstration findings.
