Abstract:This report presents the results of an evaluation study of AIRTRANS, a unique, automated guideway system located at the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. AIRTRANS was designed to move passengers, employees, baggage, mail, trash and supplies. The newest and largest system of its type in the world, it comprises 13 miles of single lane guideway and 68 vehicles, and serves 53 stations at different points in the airport complex. The system is one of the first intra-airport transit systems conceived, designed and constructed as an integral part of the airport development. The study, conducted with the cooperation of the Dallas/Fort Worth Regional airport and the Vought Corporation, was intended to codify the information and experience gained in the planning, development, implementation and initial operation of the system into an integrated body of knowledge from which those concerned with any phase of future, similar system planning and implementation could profit. The assessment team found AIRTRANS an impressive accomplishment. As a pioneering project, AIRTRANS did not have an extensive data base to build on, and consequently some problems arose attributable to insufficient system planning, analysis, organization and specification, as well as optimism about schedules and component reliability. Considering this, AIRTRANS is impressive and commendable but it could be more efficient and effective and is being constantly improved towards these goals. The report provides information useful to planners, designers, developers and operators of automated transit systems for intra-airport and other applications.
