# Downtown Brockton Transportation Technology Project — Data Package

This dataset covers traffic signal operations, environmental monitoring, smart waste receptacles, and travel-time testing along Warren Avenue in Brockton, Massachusetts. Funding: FY 2022 SMART Stage 1 grant SMARTFY22N1P1G26. Records span May 27, 2025, through June 30, 2026, with different coverage by dataset.

## Contents

The package contains 3,382 UTF-8 data CSVs with one header row. Field definitions and units are in documentation/data_dictionary.csv. DCAT-US metadata is in metadata/dcat_us_v1_1.json. The final DMP is documentation/Downtown_Brockton_Transportation_Technology_Project_DMP.pdf.

| Folder | Data |
| --- | --- |
| data/traffic/ | 3,360 controller event files, organized by intersection |
| data/environmental/ | Sensor averages, intersection temperature records, hourly West Elm nitrogen dioxide and traffic volume, and supplemental exports |
| data/waste_receptacles/ | Fill level and temperature records by device |
| data/travel_time/ | 1,415 GPS observations from 13 test runs |

Traffic intersections are Warren Avenue at Belmont Street, Legion Parkway / Highland Street, and West Elm Street. Warren_at_Legion_Highland abbreviates the Legion Parkway / Highland Street intersection. Numbered filename suffixes distinguish files with the same intersection and date/hour.

## Data notes

Only observations dated on or before June 30, 2026 are included. The cutoff uses each record’s source timestamp without time-zone conversion.

Source observation values, including sensor averages, are retained. Traffic DAT logs were converted with PerfLogTranslate. Controller IP addresses were removed from filenames and metadata rows; network-address event parameters are marked REDACTED_NETWORK_ADDRESS. The traffic files contain 8,486,810 event records. Use event timestamps to determine coverage; some filename hours differ. Interpreting events requires the vendor code definitions and intersection phase/detector assignments.

The four general environmental exports are averages across all sensors. Separate temperature exports cover Belmont Street and Legion Parkway / Highland Street on May 28–29, 2026. Waste-receptacle fill levels are percentages and temperatures are degrees Fahrenheit. Unlabeled supplemental variables remain unidentified. Averaging methods, calibration details, and sensor processing methods are unspecified.

Travel-time records retain all 1,415 source observations, including run labels, timestamps, latitude, longitude, speed, and horizontal accuracy. All five Base, two Optical, three TSP, and three EVP GPS runs are included. Speed and horizontal-accuracy units and the geodetic datum are unspecified.

Spreadsheet dates were formatted as ISO 8601 timestamps where applicable. Time zones are unspecified. Source units and observation values are preserved. Duplicate Belmont sensor tables are represented once. Zeros and unusual values are retained.
