Abstract:This document is a translation of technology-specific safety requirements developed
for the German Transrapid Maglev technology. These requirements were developed by a
working group composed of representatives of German Federal Railways (DB), Testing and
Planning Company for Maglev Systems (MVP), industry, Institute Railway Technology
(IFB), and safety experts of TUV Rheinland and TUV Hannover headed by TUV Rheinland
and sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology.
Topic areas covered include: levitation, propulsion, energy and control systems, load
assumptions and vehicle and guideway stability, design, production and quality
assurance of mechanical structures, switches, lightning protection, electromagnetic
compatibility, electrostatic discharge, fire protection and rescue plan.
The original document is in German. This unofficial translation has been completed by
a contractor for the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Railroad
Administration. The edition of this translation is March 1991. The translation has
been formatted such that changes to this body of regulations can be changed on a pagefor-
page basis in either language.
