Border Crossing Ports are points of entry for land modes along the U.S. - Canadian and U.S.- Mexcian borders. The ports of entry are located in 15 states along the U.S. borders. The nominal scale of the data set is 1:1000,000 with a maximal positional error of +- 10 meters.
<purpose>This dataset is published by USDOT-RITA-BTS to display ports of entry and its associated data as an online mapping application.</purpose>

<procdesc>The creation of this geospatial data layer was completed by USDOT-RITA-BTS in November 2011 and updated in February 2013. Step 1: Convert textual data into shapefile using the ArcGIS function. Step 2: Export the shapefile into KML and display the ports on Google Earth. Each port was checked with road network and country bounderies. Corrections were made for the locations that are far from ports, then record their geographic coordinates. Step 3: Export KML file with port locations into shapefile using the third-party software. Then other attributes were added within ArcGIS.</procdesc>

<attrdefs>Since the Border Crossing/Entry data are reported at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) port level with unique port codes, a port name must be used to present the ports which are sharing the same port code (most cases) for the surrounding ports. For example, Buffalo-Niagara Falls (port code:0901) was selected to present four ports: Buffalo-Peace Bridge, Niagara Falls-Lewiston Bridge, Niagara Falls-Rainbow Bridge and Niagara Falls-Whirlpool Bridge. The U.S. Census Bureau maintains a list of Customs districts/ports, port codes and descriptions known as the Schedule D. The most recent Schedule D is available from the U.S. Census Bureau?s Foreign Trade Division at: http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/schedules/d/dist2.txt.</attrdefs>
