Abstract:The report reviews and discusses various aspects of railroad track buckling in the vertical plane. Buckling tests of straight tracks are reviewed first. A review of the published analyses on vertical track buckling reveals that they may be grouped into two main categories. In one category, the authors assume that the track is an elastic beam which is continuously supported by a Winkler base, before as well as during buckling. In the other group, the authors assume that the track is a beam of uniform weight, which rests on a 'rigid' base and that the buckling load is reached when part of the track lifts itself off the base. To clarify the validity of some of the assumptions made, two simple models which represent the assumptions made are studied first. This is followed by a review of the literature.
