Abstract:Research was conducted to determine best practices for bridge expansion joints and headers in the Northeastern States. This research included understanding how joints and headers are used and maintained in Massachusetts and several states in and around New England, and what factors and practices have affected joint and header performance both positively and negatively. Information on joints, headers and practices collected from meetings with Massachusetts District offices is presented. A survey was sent to states around the northeast and results are summarized for each of the nine states. There were 26 respondents as some states provided multiple responses used to compare variation of practices within individual states. Bridge joint use and performance varies between states and within states. Information is presented for joint types and headers in use in the northeast including their performance, installation and maintenance practices.
