Abstract:This document is the third of a seven volume report that describe the Performance Requirements for the connected vehicle vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) safety applications developed for the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT). This volume describes the Performance Requirements for the infrastructure and vehicle components of the Red Light ViolationWarning V2I Safety Application. This application is designed to advise drivers of an upcoming signalized intersection and provide an alert or warning when the vehicle may violate a red light, based upon their speed and distance to the intersection. The application integrates data from infrastructure- and vehicle-based sensors to determine whether the vehicle will need to stop for a red light and to provide in-vehicle messages to alert and warn the driver in time to stop at the intersection stop bar. The performance requirements provide requirements for both infrastructure and vehicle application components to ensure the messages are consistent and coordinated, to best capture the attention of the driver and to avoid conflicting or confusing driver messaging.
