Abstract:The Integrated Remote Sensing and Visualization System (IRSV) is being designed to accommodate the needs of today’s Bridge Engineers at the state and local level from several aspects that were documented in Volume One, Summary Report. The following provide supplementary descriptions of the input by the Software and Information Systems (SIS) Team in developing the Knowledge Modeling and Database Development of the IRSV Prototype. An explicit language reflected in bridge management processes and the relationships among the language attributes and their semantic understanding at different level of abstraction Problem Domain Ontology (PDO) that enables bridge managers to solve complex problems where the underlying domain concepts provide a collective understanding of the bridge data based on domain knowledge from multi-dimensional resources A model of the domain knowledge of bridge inspection processes by using the ontological engineering toolkit called Generic Object Model (GenOM) Support the ability for bridge managers provides to browse, access, query and reason about complex bridge inspection processes Provide a method for answering “what-if” queries via GenOM by matching various initial conditions and circumstances based on rules specified in the PDO Rules with ontological concepts and properties that describe the problem domain to support inferences about the problem domain Temporal knowledge provided through a flexible Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) framework to compose and provide services on-demand to other system modules A software system that is interoperable, scalable, and adaptable that facilitates heterogeneous data requirements, operational requirements, and overlapping functionalities Functional requirements primarily based on input and feedback provided by North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT), which will be expanded to other states and localities in Phase Two And finally, an IRSV prototype user interface that combines bridge inspection data and domain knowledge based on a knowledge representation and goal-driven modeling technique
