    • Abstract:
In January 2010, Robert ‘Sam’ L. Carstens, F.ASCE, a retired (1986) professor of civil engineering and Professor Emeritus at Iowa State University, donated to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) a scrapbook and 131 snapshots documenting the 1948 through 1949 construction of the Benton Street Bridge, which formerly spanned the Iowa River in the south central part of Iowa City. Carstens supervised construction of the Benton Street Bridge.

Portions of the Carstens’ collection have been scanned and are available on the Iowa DOT’s Web site at: http://historicalphotos.iowadot.gov/ermsportal/historicalphotos_home.aspx. See the “Benton Street Bridge” collection on the site.

Because the 1940s-era Benton Street Bridge was the first all-welded, continuous five-span deck, plate-girder bridge built in Iowa, Carstens’ collection of newspaper clippings and photos documenting its construction are of historical significance. Consequently, the Iowa DOT decided to record an interview with Carstens discussing his personal and professional background, as well as his experience supervising construction of the Benton Street Bridge.
