      This research study evaluated the performance of various pavement preservation treatments over time and under different

      environmental conditions to quantify the economics of each treatment type. There are three primary techniques utilized in Colorado

      for preservation of asphalt pavements and three for concrete pavements. For asphalt pavements these are crack sealing, chip seals, and

      thin hot mix asphalt overlays. For concrete pavements the treatments are joint resealing, cross-stitching, and microgrinding. Full-scale

      test sections were constructed in 2005 and some additional test sections previously constructed were also included for performance

      measurement. These test sections include crack sealing, chip seals, thin overlays, joint resealing, cross-stitching and microgrinding.

      Test results indicate that continuation of crack sealing, chip sealing, and thin hot mix overlays is justified for asphalt pavements.

      Performance results of the preservation treatments for concrete pavements were not as successful. Propagation of the crack into the

      adjacent slab occurred in the cross-stitching test sections. Microgrinding concrete pavements does not appear to be effective at

      reducing cracking and may be detrimental to performance. The disappointing results of the joint resealing test sections indicate that a

      review of the specifications should be considered.

      Implementation:

      The Preventive Maintenance Best Practices Manual is Appendix A of this report. The methods described in this manual are based on

      a review of the literature, a series of interviews conducted in each Colorado DOT region, full-scale field test sections, and experience

      of the researchers. These best practices should be followed when preventive maintenance procedures are conducted on asphalt and

      concrete pavements in Colorado.
