Abstract:The purpose of this report is to outline the role of systems analysis and mathematical modeling in the planning of transportation systems. The planning process is divided into three sectors (demand, supply, and policy) reflecting the demand for transportation services by the public, the ability of the system to deliver these services, and the effects of management policies on the equilibration between supply and demand. The composition of each sector is examined and illustrated by samples from recent major transportation studies and the modeling literature. Emphasis is placed on structure dynamics, and feedback effects.
