Abstract:The use of truck-mounted changeable message signs (TMCMSs) for mobile operations is desirable for providing drivers with information to better prepare them for unexpected conditions. Traditionally, temporary traffic control for mobile operations has been limited to arrow panels and sometimes static warning messages mounted to the work vehicle. The use of warning signs in advance of the work operation is typically not practical due to the constant movement or stop-and-go nature of the work. TMCMSs can fill an information gap for these mobile operations by providing drivers with better information regarding both the operation and the expected actions based on the operation. Based on the findings of both a human factors laboratory study and field evaluations conducted during this research and basic message design principles, researchers have created a sampling of recommended messages for use on TMCMSs during mobile operations. These messages are defined by the type of work, road type, and identified concerns being addressed by the message.
